No gimmees for cross country hardware - IHSA

Editor's note: This is the first of a three-part series previewing the IHSA state cross country meet.

PEORIA - Tremont's Parker Thompson will have to fight for his second consecutive Illinois High School Association Class 1A boys cross country state championship.


And the Turks will have to fight to earn a trophy for a top-three team finish Saturday at Detweiller Park. That much is clear in an otherwise wide-open state meet.

“I've never seen a closer team race in a state meet on paper,'' said 30-year veteran Tremont coach Mike Lynn. “I feel we have a real good shot at a trophy. We'll be in the mix.''

Each of the 20 teams will send out seven runners in the 10 a.m. race. A team's score will be determined by its fastest five finishers.



Tremont's top four runners are Thompson, John Boyle, Chris Pflederer and Cole Dill. Jake Devine, Josh Juchems and Adam Koch all are capable of being the Turks' fifth man Saturday.

“We need our No. 2-5 guys to run well as a pack,'' Lynn said. “That will be crucial.''
